    ‘Makes me cry with laughter': Ambitious guy doesn't understand why he gets ghosted after a successful job interview, turns out they hired him, never told him, then fired him for no-showing

    Interviewing for jobs can be a disheartening process. So when this ambitious go-getter got ghosted by a company after what he thought was a successful interview, he felt deflated. Several weeks later, he finds out that he actually was hired, but was never told, and then fired for not showing up… 

    To call that disorganized is an understatement. How can you be a business and think you've hired someone without even one document being signed? Who approved this?? So disappointing too, because missing out on a job you really wanted is a hard blow to the ego and motivation. Back when I was going through job searching, I would take 3 to 4 interviews a day, and some were so disheartening that sometimes I would cry afterwards… But as long as you keep going, I promise there is a light at the end of your tunnel! 

    This guy was way more ambitious than I, because he didn't lose any steam. He emailed them and called them, and nothing, so he moved on and already has other interviews set up. It was only when his brother-in-law asked him how his new job was going that he started to ask questions. His BIL apparently works at a distant branch of the same company. He said he was hired and that they then fired him for not showing up for a week. The BIL thought he was just being irresponsible, but now he realized that his company messed up…

    • He was flabbergasted. This was a new level of disorganization. Seriously, who gets officially hired with zero paperwork done? He never got a phone call or email. Somewhere, something got seriously miscommunicated and, most likely, lost in the shuffle. An incompetent hiring manager probably messed something up and didn't want to admit to it, so just let everything carry on, and no one wins.

      This is seriously unbelievable. I had an interview for a job a while ago and I thought I did really well.

    • I said okay, that's understandable. So I waited. I sent a follow-up email after a week, and got nothing.

    • I tried calling the hiring manager a few days later, the call went straight to voicemail, and no one ever got back to me.

    • Complete silence. Fast forward to today, my brother-in- law, who is a manager in another department there, asks me how the new job is going.

    • I was confused and told him they never even got back to me. He looked shocked and told me that apparently I was hired, didn't show up for the first week, and was therefore fired.

    • They hired someone else in my place about two weeks ago. Honestly, I can't process this.

    • I'm pretty sure I dodged a massive bullet. I've never been hired with so little fanfare that I was never notified of a start date.

    • How did they onboard you without tax paperwork or a background check? One of the best decisions I made was not to wait for this opportunity and put my life on hold for it.

    • Luckily, this guy didn't lose his job-searching steam! He's still on track to finding the perfect job in his dream career path, and the way he was able to brush this little hiccup off his shoulder, we have full faith in him.

    • _brytt That is disorganization to an insane level. How do they get so far as scheduling your first week of work without not only a signed contract, but without even speaking to you?

    • TechnicalWhore Send a formal, certified mail letter to HR and ask for an explanation. I have seen this once before where the manager for the position had a relative of theirs they wanted hired that did not make the cut. They then did not inform the chosen candidate and put out a backstory that the person never showed. If HR is unresponsive its a tell that they were in on it as well.

    • JMLegend22 As your brother in law why they never called to give you a start date if you were hired or returned your calls? Tell him that you have receipts. Ask if they do.
