A couple living in a trailer park sees something that they mistake for a bobcat. They see it only once, and not again for some time. Then the husband goes away on a trip to Canada, where he grew up. The woman sees the "bobcat" again. But then she sees it more clearly, and she hears meowing. Suddenly, she realizes it's not a bobcat at all – it's just a normal cat! She sees the cat is skittish, and she's also scared of the cat herself. But the two slowly make their way to each other. She starts putting food out, and over time the cat becomes more and more comfortable with her. She ends up adopting the little thing and naming her Creature, which is just adorable.
Every neighborhood has its thing it's on watch for. Some have the neighborhood racoon who meddles in trash cans and tries to break into homes. Some have a strange and eerie possum who hangs around staring at you through your kitchen window. And some have the neighborhood bobcat, who everyone fears. No one can take their kitty outside, and taking their dog on a walk becomes a worry. But what if all that fear surrounding something was really just in your head? There's something especially magical about the moment you realize the fierce, mysterious "bobcat" you've been fearing from afar is actually just a very fluffy domestic cat who wandered into your life by accident. The initial awe and wonder transforms into a real and actual fascination with a domestic cat.
Mistaking a cat for a bobcat says a lot about the cat themselves. They carry an air of wildness so convincingly that they come off as a predator. Their size, their color, and their energy all affect how they're seen. They must come off as confident, or else no one would mistake them for a wild animal. In the story below, the couple end up adopting a cat, but only after thinking its a bobcat. If this kind of thing has ever happened to you, comment below.
