'Good luck finding a replacement for me': Employee resigns after manager downplays his work, prompting four other employees to quit

This boss may have lost his star employee, but that was only the beginning of the end for him.

When you run a company with a high turnover rate, it's probably not a good idea to insult the few folks who have remained loyal to you over the years. This employee was in charge of a significantly understaffed department. Although his boss continually refused to listen to requests to hire more folks on this team, the employee and his current staff still managed to bring in the most business for the company time and time again.

Still, the fact remained that the employee needed more support. Eventually, more and more folks working under the employee continued to leave, and the overall effectiveness and productivity of his department began to worsen. It got to the point where the employee's boss reprimanded him during a company-wide meeting.

That behavior ended up being the final straw for the employee. After being in charge of running his department, hiring replacements, and fulfilling company expectations to bring in more business than other departments, the employee could not take it anymore. After the meeting, the employee returned to his desk and immediately began drafting his letter of resignation. Little did everyone know that when he submitted that letter to his boss, it would become the start of a mass exodus.

After the author resigned, news spread like wildfire. It did not take long before four more employees on that same team left in solidarity. Not only were they frustrated by the way in which the author was treated by their boss, but they also knew that without the author, this team simply would cease to function.
Perhaps once the mass exodus ends and the dust settles, this boss can take some valuable lessons from this experience. We know, of course, that this is wishful thinking. His bravado and ego seem to cloud his judgment and capacity for rational thought and decent management. People like that are unfortunately unlikely to learn from their mistakes and improve their behavior.
