When you look around at the world, it's easy to see a reflection of something, an essence of something that was once real and authentic. We all curate an image, an identity, a feeling, and spend so much of our time online, which is a symbol of ever-moving avatars whose real life person is something entrenched deep within one, covered and immersed by the superficial barriers and garbs we clothe ourselves in, metaphoric or not. Edited videos, photoshopped images, and photos that are just mere scraps of the real thing. We're all apart of the dystopia anyone would have feared 30 years ago – ghost-hacking ourselves into nearly nonhuman beings. Sometimes it can be so refreshing to see something really real, something authentic. Something funny, embarrassing, that brings out our repressed humanity.
Something that's always held great importance in humanism is music. Grunge is one of those genres that really harps on the ugly side of things. No one is trying to be pretty while they're angsty, unshowered, and screaming into the void. It's a mix of punk and metal that absolutely grabs hold of your heart and tries to rip it in two. Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains made breakthrough music in the late 80s and 90s to strip society down and make everyone look at this through an alternative lens. And that is real, just like these animal memes are really silly.
Animals never think about aesthetic, Instagram followers, or whether their boyfriend really loves them or not. Animals more or less transcend the scum and heartbreak of human emotion. They don't get petty, and they don't really care what anyone thinks of them. Animals are super silly without even trying, and that can also be refreshing. Maybe you're so sick of seeing this and that online, so sick of feeling like you have to fake every interaction with a person just to seem normal. Sometimes the most cathartic thing that brings you closer to yourself is just scrolling some absolutely ridiculously silly animal memes that you can giggle at, laugh at, and feel like a kid again. You can certainly listen to grunge while you scroll animal memes for a good juxtaposition of everything at once.
