Winter is a time of reflection for many. While summer is filled with distracting, fleeting fun, memories of travel, ice cream, and cold water, winter can feel like everyday blends into itself. You bundle up, go through the days that are short and end early, go home to crawl under covers. The winter sharpens our awareness of vulnerability. And as for animals, it's the same. As temperature drops, the world feels harsher and less forgiving. Wind bites, daylight ends early, and even simple things like going into the shower take extra effort because you dread the moments of cold while you're waiting to get into the piping hot water. It becomes impossible not to notice the stray animals outside enduring the cold without a shelter, warmth, or a friendly owner. Their presence feels urgent to protect, and it wakes something up in a person. 

Cold weather isn't for everyone. It's especially harsh on animals without homes. Stray cats curl up in the cold, and it can be heartbreaking to see. Food is also harder to obtain, water freezes, and it's easier to get sick in these kinds of environments. Winter tests comfort, especially for animals outside. Seeing an animal braving icy nights or snow-covered streets makes the imbalance between our warmth and their exposure impossible to ignore. 

And someone doesn't ignore it. This man has been trying to tempt this stray cat to get closer to him for a while, but the cat has pretentiously put his nose in the air when he sees the wet food outside.
