Technically, the first online lolcat was made around 2005. However, people have been pairing cute captions with purrfect pictures of their cats since furrever. Even as early as the beginning of the 1900s! there's a picture of a cat in a baby's high chair, with the caption underneath, “What's delaying dinner?” So, you see, making cat memes is human nature. Something in our soul yearns for it.

As something of an expurrt on cat memes, we can safely say that they just don't make cat memes like they used to. Each one used to be either so ridiculous that is was funny, or so funny that it was ridiculous. Now, because they're “popular”, everyone is trying to make them, and it just makes the overall quality go down. So, when we see these antique memes, we remember how good they used to be.
