Employee abruptly fired after four years due to accumulated "late" arrivals, despite promised time-card adjustments due to main entrance restrictions, he claims it's their excuse to replace employees with lower-paid hires: 'The promise didn't apply to me'

  • I just got fired for being 'late'. And the reason is so stupid.

My shift was about to end, and I was getting ready to sign out, when suddenly my supervisor pulled me into the office.
  • I didn't understand what was going on, but I figured I'd see what she wanted after I signed out.
  • She had me sit down, closed the door, and after a few minutes of this awkward silence, she pushed a printed paper from HR across the desk in front of me and told me this was my last day at work.

  • I was literally shocked. I've been working at this place for four years. When I asked her why, all she did was point at the paper.
  • It was a list of all my recent 'lates'. Most of them were silly things like 5 minutes, 8 minutes, and sometimes 15 minutes at most.

  • But the problem is, the only reason I was late was because a few months ago, company security changed the rules and banned us from using the side employee entrance.
  • Now we all have to use the main entrance and a manager has to open the door for us every morning.

  • I explained to her that I would arrive exactly on time, press the intercom, and still have to wait for 5 or even 10 minutes until the supervisor on duty would deign to come and open the door.
  • This was happening to everyone, not just me. And they always told us, every time, "Don't worry, if we're late opening the door for you, we'll adjust your time card to your original arrival time." They said it wouldn't be a problem at all.

  • Apparently, that promise didn't apply to me. They let all these lates accumulate and used them as an excuse to let me go.
  • Honestly, I can't say I'm completely surprised. They've been cutting hours for the entire warehouse team for a while, including me of course, and have been hiring new people for lower wages.
  • I had a feeling my turn was coming. What a great end to the week, right?

  • Mysterious_Board_224 File with labor board for making you work without getting paid. FLSA.
  • Plenty-Hair-4518 So they just proved that they never adjuted your pay and stole time from you and now are firing you for that. They gave you proof!
  • OutinDaBarn Don't feel too bad I was fired and replaced for a guy that was paid $8 an hour less. They had nothing but good things to say about me as they fired me, they were "just going in a different direction".

  • Intelligent-Net-5152 They looked for a reason to fire you. There are people who are always late but end up staying for years. I bet you if you were really good friends they wouldn't fire you.

  • Fickle_Gold_5921 Depends where you are, there might be ppl who will disagree with me. When your work starts at say 9, dont be at the door at 9. You should be seated or ready at work station 10 mins before 9. This is simple etiquette that will see you through a lot in future. Learn from this and move on.

  • Specific-Ad1428 Now I know that most states are right to hire states, and they technically can fire you for anything that's not covered by law, but I believe that this technically is an illegal reason to fire you.
  • Timurtoyourbayezid I learned this lesson very early in my career when I was let go in a very similar fashion. Never give them any ammo that they can print and present to you as proof you are deserving of termination. It's better to always arrive 5 minutes early and duck out the moment your shift ends than periodically arrive 5 minutes late and constantly stay off the clock for 15-30 minutes to finish an important task. It's not about the work or even the quality of work in most instances, but ra
  • Useless890 This might give them an out. If the deal about adjusting time cards was never in writing, it doesn't exist. They've got it fixed so they can fire anyone for habitual lateness.

  • Glass-Hedgehog3940 I see your point but look at it from the other angle: the company security change happened a few months ago giving you ample time to adjust and arrive 10 minutes earlier so you can make sure the manager can let you in to start your shift on time. You need to be ready to work at your start time.
