    Young dog shelter volunteer’s unique bond with shy pupper leads to surprise adoption after his mom begs their landlord to be pet friendly, mom says: ‘The staff say she loves him, apparently she lights up when she hears his voice.’

    Welcome to the tale of the boy who wanted nothing more than to love and care for a canine, and the heartwarming way that his efforts volunteering at a dog shelter made his dream come true.

    When you think of a kid wanting a dog the first thing that comes to mind is most certainly not a storied dog shelter volunteer record. After all, most kids struggle to spend more than five minutes without a device of some sort glued to their eyeballs. But in this heart-filling story we are lucky enough to come across a kid whose whole world is pawdorable puppers, and instead of dreaming of reaching the highest level in his favorite game, he dreams of one day owning his own doggo. And that is how all this wholesomeness kicked off.

    For while he was volunteering at his local dog shelter, focusing on helping shy dogs come out of their shell so that they can be adopted, he fell in love. He fell for a shy pupper who was likely brought up in less than kind conditions and when she began to trust the child's kindness she would light up every time she saw him. Over time their bond grew until it was too much for his mother to bear. She could not go another day without her son getting to go home with the dog he had grown so close to and invested so much time into. A heartfelt tale that proves there is a lot of good left in the kids of today, especially if they get to work with some wonderful woofers.

    • Honestly this is one of the most wholesome things that we have come across in the shelter space and in the neurodivergent space. Shelters need so much support, and it comes in all shapes and sizes, from the tough jobs that require medical degrees, to the sweet and simple jobs that simply require a love of animals. And what better way is there to get kids to learn to love and respect animals than with a volunteer position that creates an intimate interaction between the two? Not to mention the responsibility and validation that such a position affords the young volunteer.

    • This could hardly be any more wholesome and pawfect. Much of what is done in animal therapy is teaching kids the softness, sensitivity and kindness that is needed to connect with others. But for a kid to get to experience and practise that with a pupper who needs help coming out of their shell is simply sublime. Both the child and the pupper are making great developmental strides together, making the world a better place with each step they take. If only more poor shelter puppers could receive this kind of treatment.
