They're not called "man's best friend" for nothing. Friendship is one of the miracles of life. It's so different from familial love or romantic love. We actually get to choose our friends, and the messiness of familial or romantic love doesn't get in the way. With family, things can get complicated and heavy easily. You grew up together, you know each other inside and out. You can become resentful of your parents if you feel like they didn't raise you right, give you enough, or set you up for enough success. And on the other hand, parents can be resentful of their kids for demanding all of them and forcing them to sacrifice everything, even if they chose to have children in the first place! But friendship transcends those things. It gives us a great and deep love without the messiness of resentment or responsibility involved with family. And with romantic relationships, an incredible slew of other things can easily go wrong. There's betrayals, sensitivities, boundary crossing, you name it. Your partner said something a year ago but you can't let it go. Unlike friendship, romantic relationships are just so much more intimate, which have the ability to attack us in ways friendships can't. It's more vulnerable, and therefore more likely to hurt us.
What makes friendship so powerful is choice. Friends are not bound by obligation or legality. You chose your friends, and you can leave whenever you want. There are no legal tethers, and there's much more ease around friends. A true friend doesn't require performance or to explain ourselves endlessly like familial or romantic love. They understand the unpolished version of us that they see. And what makes dogs man's best friend is their loyalty to us, their subservient natures, and their unconditional love they have for us. Dogs don't expect much. They don't care how much money you make, if you're a bad person or not, or if you cheat on your partner. As long as you show up for them with cuddles, kisses, and kibble, they're definitely A-okay. So enjoy these adorable dog memes to appreciate man's best friend.
