As someone who works in a creative field, I struggle to concentrate on what I need to do every single day. I can go through all of the motions, but as soon as it's time for me to actually sit down and write, I lose every ounce of focus I managed to hold on to during the day.
Creativity or not, each of us turns to different sources of motivation that can push us back on track and help us finish the workday with a sense of success and fulfilment. Some people like to turn up uplifting music and let the rhythm inspire them back to work, others close their eyes for a few seconds and allow their bodies relax enough so that they can get into a better headspace.
Most of us, I'd imagine, use the best incentive out there–food.
You can use food in many ways to motivate yourself enough to finish your work. You can use it as a reward system, telling yourself you will eat fun snacks if you finish certain tasks, or you can simply help yourself to a sugary snack that will keep your energy up and your focus sharp. You can even do both at the same time.
When I need a little boost in motivation, I turn to coffee. I know that fueling myself with caffeine is not the healthiest option there is, but as long as it works, I will take what I can get. So, whenever I feel like my motivation or concentration is slipping, or if I feel like my creativity is simply not there, I leave my desk for five minutes and fetch myself a freshly brewed cup of coffee. I like having a cozy, hot drink in my hand, I like the taste and the energy of the caffeine, and if I feel really generous, I even treat myself to a cookie to go along with it. Then, getting back to work doesn't feel as scary as before.
Another form of motivation can also be a distraction. Who doesn't love a short distraction from work that will hopefully get you back on track? That is what the hilarious memes below are for, which you can enjoy while I go make myself yet another cup of delicious coffee.
