    'Accidentally improved team morale': Employee attending Zoom meeting forgets to turn their microphone off and gets caught delivering a motivational speech to their cat

    The unwritten rule of the universe is: if your cat is the room during a Zoom meeting, you have to show it to everyone. 

    And for some reason, this employee did not seem to know this rule. That's the only thing that would explain his reaction to the situation. Everyone knows, even since that time in 2020 when we were all sitting at home with our cats for way longer than expected, that cats love Zoom meetings. Don't know why, don't know how they always seem to know when they are happening, but they do, and they make the best of it. Our cats like computers in general. Probably like the warmth. And bothering us when we're doing things. But they seem to have a special sense for when we're in a meeting, and they like making their presence known. 

    Of course, one of the benefits of Zoom meetings is that you can turn your mic off and silence your cat or reply to your cat when it's trying to tell you something, but for that, you actually do have to make sure your mic is on. And this employee forgot… and so everyone in the meeting heard the cat. And the way that they replied to the cat. And for some reason, they the cat owner thought it would be a problem rather than something pawsome.

      I work from home and had a routine Zoom meeting with about 20 coworkers, including my manager and two higher-ups. Nothing intense just status updates. I joined, said hello, and immediately muted myself (or so I thought).

      About 10 minutes in, the meeting got painfully boring. My brain fully checked out. I started scrolling my phone, and when my cat jumped on my desk, I instinctively said, in my normal speaking voice:

    • Maybe our office is slightly different, but we, here at ICHC, have a rule that if your cat is in the room with you during a Zoom meeting, you simply must bring it up to the camera. It is necessary. It truly does boost morale. In fact, it is one of the best things about working in an office full of cat people. And if you don't do it, then there will be consequences. And those consequences will include literally everyone involved in the meeting being extremely disappointed in you. Yep, at ICHC, cats in Zoom meetings are something that has and will continue to happen regularly.

    • Okay, so it is not just our office. Good to know. Truly. We are glad that other people are catching on to how pawsome this is. Everyone loves cats in Zoom meetings, and if someone doesn't… if there is some boss out there who is bothered by this, who asks you to immediately remove your cat from the screen once it appears, we would like you to tell us about it, and then we would like to have a word with them. And possibly write an article about them. Because behavior like that in the workplace is simply unacceptable.
