What did you dream last night? Did you dream of soaring into space, cozied up in an airtight rocket where you can peacefully be alone? Did you dream of picking berries in the rain while a squirrel told you how to hunt for treasure? Did you dream someone was chasing you, and woke up with sweat beating down your face? Our dreams aren't meaningless, but we're not claiming there's an exact science behind it. The symbols we experience are imbedded into our psyche, and only need to be seen in our subconsciousness during sleep, REM specifically. There's such a beauty to the world of dreams. Even our nightmares give us insight into our thoughts, feelings, desires, wishes, and inner world.
Dreams have fascinated humans for thousands of years, inspiring myths, theories, and endless curiosity. Today, science offers insight into why we dream, even if many mysteries remain. Most dreaming occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, a stage of sleep marked by high brain activity, relaxed muscles, and vivid mental imagery. During REM sleep, the brain is nearly as active as it is when awake, despite the body being temporarily paralyzed to prevent us from physically acting out our dreams.
One major theory suggests that dreams play a role in memory processing. As we sleep, the brain reviews and consolidates information gathered during the day. Emotional experiences, in particular, are often replayed in dream form, helping the brain integrate feelings with memories. This may explain why dreams frequently involve familiar people or situations, but appear in strange or fragmented ways.
And who wouldn't want to dream of dogs? The precious pets that are deemed man's best friend for good reason – because of their loyalty and love for us. Dogs dream too, and we should dream of dogs! Their silliness spans our hearts like a warm hug, like a mug of hot cocoa in the wintertime. The romance of dreaming isn't specific to our crush at the time, it can be transcended to fluffy animals alike. So please enjoy this wholesome scroll of absolutely dreamy doggos for perfect winter nights before you hit your head on the hay and go off to dreamland.
