Employee resigns for better opportunity, manager ignores him for two weeks, then panics right before his final day: '[He] asked what it would take for me to stay...'

Leaving a professional environment is never an easy transition, but there are professional ways for both employees and managers to navigate the situation and unprofessional ones.

This manager decided to handle it unprofessionally, and it backfired for the company at large.

News like this is not easy to share, nor is it simple to facilitate all the logistical matters that go into passing the baton. With all this mind, showing a bit of respect and understanding should be at the forefront of both an employee and employer's mind, especially if nobody wants to burn any bridges. In this instance, the employee was more than generous when he handed in his letter of resignation. He agreed to stay on for three more weeks at the company when he had no need to do so. He only did it to ensure that he would not be leaving his department in a state of total disarray.

However, the other key part of ensuring that a work transition goes smoothly is the fact that it takes two to tango. The employee was ready, willing, and able to do his part, but his manager simply refused to meet him halfway. Instead, he spent the next two weeks avoiding the employee at all costs. By the time the final week arrived, the manager finally realized that he was ill prepared for what comes next. Given how available the employee was to help, the manager really has no one to blame but himself.

This story just goes to show that sometimes, taking the high road as an employee does not necessarily mean that you'll be respected for doing so during your final weeks at a job. This author is going to have to embrace the reality that he did the right thing, even if he doesn't get credit for it. His boss, on the other hand, is going to have to face the fact that he made his own bed. The only reason why he will be unable to pick up the pieces and run a strong department after the author leaves is that he refused to take part in managing the turnover. Here's hoping that other employee do not have to struggle as a result of this man's negligence.
