This is me, Jesse Kessenheimer. I'm not a mom to a human baby, but I do have a dog. Before the parents in the chat go insane about this comparison, trust me, I know that they're two TOTALLY different things. However, when I first started training my dog, Murphy, it was clear that he was going to be a tough cookie to crack. Reactive, smart, and full of cuckoo boy energy, Murphy needed dilligent and consistent training at all times. Without a highly structured environment, his behavior would lapse.
In walks my mom.
I love her to death, but boy, did she derail my training regimen at first. As if she knew better than my $1000 professional trainer and, insisting on staying stuck in her ways, she continued to do whatever she pleased with "Her Granddog," because she didn't want to change. After a few educational conversations and some heart-to-heart moments of discussion, we came to an agreement… Agreeing to disagree.
Like the mother-in-law in this next story, the only way that old-school parenting tactics see change is with a fruitful conversation. It may kick off with a flared temper and a frustrating argument, but perhaps agreeing to disagree can lead to lasting family peace… Or not.
