The universal cat distribution chose me back in early November and put me in possession of a little black void I named Simone. I took her to the vet right away to see if she was chipped, but no chip.

The vet could not tell if she was fixed, but she was not pregnant, so I decided to take her in and wait and see if she would go into heat before I scheduled a spay. I asked all of the neighbors if they were missing a little black cat, posted on Next Door, posted on Facebook, etc.

No one claimed her. She turned out to be very timid but sweet. You could pick her up, brush her, hold her, scritch her, though she did sometimes give little love bites when she was over stimulated.

Two weeks go by and she goes into heat, confirming my suspicion that she was not fixed. I made an appointment with the vet for after Christmas because a) the vet is concerned about some potential heart issues and wants to give her an EKG before a spay and b)

I was about to go out of town and didn't want my cat sitter having to deal with any potential cat health issues while I was halfway across the country.

After Christmas I was sitting at the airport waiting on my flight and get a text from my neighbor saying she found the owner of the cat. Turns out the lady lived one street over. When I got home, I called the owner who immediately asked if she could come over and verify it was her cat.

The owner arrived and I was immediately a little put off. She barged into my house calling the cat's name (Toothless) and asking where she was.
  • 10
I grabbed "Toothless" from another room and put her in her owners arms where the cat immediately reared up and freaked out. The owner clasped her to her chest while "Toothless" tried to squirm away, crying and clawing.
  • 11
She finally put her down and the cat hid behind my couch. She then told me that, at her house, the cat was mean and scratched and bit so much they had to warn guests about her. This is not how I experienced this cat.

In my house, you could pick her up, scritch her under the chin, brush her, etc. if a stranger came in she might cower but she didn't bite unless you missed ALL of her cues that she wasn't having it (hissing, crouching, etc).

The owner said it was for sure her cat and showed me pictures on her phone, so I was satisfied that I had the correct owner. However, she had come to my house without a cat carrier.
  • 14
I said "do you want to go home and get your cat carrier?" And she said no, she would just put the cat in her car. I then offered my cat carrier, telling her that it wasn't a good idea to drive with a loose cat in her car, even if it was one street over.

So she put the cat in my carrier, thanked me, and then bounded to her car swinging the cat carrier around like it was a duffle bag. I winced, but was resolved that it wasn't my cat so I just let it go. I was very happy I found the owner, don't get me wrong.

I've had animals get out and go missing before and never found them, so I knew this would really make her day to know the cat was found.

It didn't sit right with me how this woman manhandled the cat and swung her around in that carrier, but she took her, and that was that.
  • 19
Less than 12 hours later I had a text from the owner that said the cat had gotten out again and, wouldn't you know it, before the day was out, Toothless was on my porch again.
  • 20
I decided enough was enough. The way she manhandled the cat and swung it around in my cat carrier (that she kept for a week before I insisted she return it) just put me off, and the fact that she couldn't even keep the cat in the house for a single day before it escaped again? No. Just no.

Likewise, it's a red flag that the cat is over a year old now and she never bothered to spay or chip her in that time, especially if the cat is prone to getting out. It is also a red flag that she described the cat as one who bites and claws enough that guests in the house had to be warned not to touch her.
  • 22
So, I decided that I am keeping the cat, having her chipped and spayed, and ensuring she doesn't get out (she has not even tried one time to get out of my house).
  • 23
I don't have faith that the owner was treating the cat kindly, and if there is anything I hate, it is bad pet owners who treat their pets poorly. I am not telling anyone in the neighborhood that I have the cat either.

She will be an indoor only kitty (as they all should be in this neighborhood because it is adjacent to a very busy street). Am I the asshole?

Srvntgrrl_789 NTA. The cat distribution system works, in part, to make sure feline overlords find a proper human to lovingly rule over.:) Get Simone microchipped. Then, legally, she's yours.

Rose Raster Sounds like Toothless found her way home and decided to give the neighbor a proper eviction notice. Honestly, if I were her, I'd want to hang out with the person who believes in cat carriers over "loose in the car" as a valid transportation option. You may have unofficially adopted the world's most rebellious feline.
