AIO for being annoyed that my in-laws keep shutting off their hot water while we're staying here? We're staying with my wife's parents for a few days over Christmas. Day 1 (Christmas): I showered after lunch when everyone left. Water was ice cold. I assumed everyone had used it up - didn't question it.
  • Day 2: I learn they actually turn their hot water heater OFF between 10 AM and 5 PM. Nobody mentioned this beforehand, but okay, at least now I know... right? Day 3: Nope. At 9 AM I find out the real cutoff is actually 8 AM, not 10.
  • So again, I get stuck with a cold shower because the schedule wasn't communicated and, apparently, keeps changing. When I'm understandably annoyed, the vibe get isn't "Oh yeah, we should've told you." It's basically: shrug "Well, that's just how it is."

  • My wife also doesn't help the situation or question why this wasn't communicated to us - she totally just rolls over at the slightest bit of confrontation. And somehow I'm being made out as the awkward one because I've stepped out of the room a couple of times to stay sane.
  • So here I am: three days, three freezing showers, zero heads-up, and I'm supposedly the problem for not loving surprise ice baths. AITA for thinking guests should maybe be told the hot water is shut off so they don't get ambushed by it?

  • TwiLuv NOR, stepfather is LOUDLY signaling he does NOT want guests. It's all passive aggressive sh*t, but it's pretty obvious if OP & wife are paying the least bit of attention. Run to a hotel-motel if at all possible, or pack up & head home now. Definitely tell wife visits will be hotel-motel stays from now on.

  • Vegetable_Pineapple2 It takes more gas/electricity to heat up their entire water heater tank every day than it does to leave it on. That is 100% not recommended. Not only is it using more energy, it is shortening the life span of their water heater. But I'm not going to lie, I think they know that. This feels intentional and I would not stay with them again. They've made it pretty clear they don't want you there.
  • Ordinary Mango4008 Ask every hour during the day...."is the hot water on?" Make it a big deal. My hubby's mom turned off her AC and invited us to dinner...hubby was annoyed with her so he put $20 on the counter and told her to turn it on when she has company. Basically he shamed her. Try that...."T'|| contribute $10 towards your water bill if someone turns on the hot water so I don't have to take a cold shower." Shame them.
  • Maine302 Don't ever stay there again. They're weirdos. And if your wife insists on staying there, let her stay there alone.

  • bigfootvsdisco NOR. Your in-laws arent just inconveniencing their houseguests. Their behavior is straight up foolish. If they are shutting the hot water off each day to save electricity/money they would be better off turning their thermostat down a degree or turning the overall temp on the heater down. In fact, the energy used to bring it back up to temp each day is possibly GREATER. Not to mention power cycling puts added stress on older water heaters. Additionally, if the hot water is already
  • Peachy-Queen-12358 NOR idk why some people are so weird and gaslight you that you're the weird one. The way I was raised, you do everything you can to ensure your guests are comfortable.

  • Accurate Thought4932 You are not overreacting. Next time stay at a hotel.
