Entitled parents demand that their independent son give them access to his bank account, when he refuses they accuse him of "secrecy", claiming that he must be hiding something: 'They continued to push the issue'

At what age does it become acceptable to start keeping things for your parents? Well, let's us break it down for you. As a responsible advisor, we'd like to say never, but as a realist, we'd have to say it depends it what is being 'hidden'…This independent son is in an awkward position when his senior parents request access to his finances as a way to 'maintain transparency' and 'be prepared for emergencies'…However, he feels, and rightfully so, that they lost that entitlement the minute they stopped paying him a monthly allowance. In his mind, it's his money, and no one else needs to have access to it. Not even his parents.

If it's not enough for them to know that he'll always support them in a time of financial need, then there's nothing more he can do. He loves his family, and maintaining a healthy relationship with them is a priority for him…However, that does not mean that just because these two people brought him into the earth, that he owes them an explanation of everything he does while living on it!

Hopefully, these parents and their son can make it through this financial hurdle and establish some appropriate boundaries on the other side. Because most parents' goal is to raise their child to be independent…not try to halt the process with a desperation to stick their noses into everything!
