Every so often, we come across a story in which an employee has a decent manager ready to defend them when the situations calls for it,
This author worked part-time hours and was frequently allowed to leave her shifts early to take care of her children, provided that all of her work was completed before her departure. She was a beloved member of the team, and everyone understood her predicament. She made this arrangement with her manager and her teammates, and none of her work ever suffered as a result. It seemed like she had a good thing going there… that is, until upper management stepped in out of nowhere and made some sweeping changes.
When this happened, the higher-ups enforced a new rule that employees were no longer allowed leave early, even when their work was completed to the best possible standard and even when there was nothing left to do. It's a classic "all talk, no show" policy, considering that productivity and efficiency were not affected either way.
Although there was not much that the author's manager could do given that her hands were tied, the author did find a clever loophole in the new policy. This allowed her to clock in and discreetly amend her hours so that she was never scheduled for more than she used to be and could still leave early. On paper, there was nothing upper management could do about it because, well, her shift was always a five-hour one and not an eight-hour one. Given her productivity, there was no reason for them to fire her either. Besides, her manager actually had her back.
