A family with a dog know that the dog is the favorite family member for everyone. And everyone is okay with that. That gives parents good collateral to get you to come visit and you a even more reason to come visit. It's a win-win! That's why coming home for the holidays is so important. In many cases, this is a family dog that grew up with all the now-adult children. This pup will always be a puppy, but they might be anywhere between 12 and 14 years old now. So you have to enjoy these moments back home with them! Curl up by the Christmas tree together, wrap up a present for them, sneak some Christmas ham to them under the table; it's a beautiful time.
There is such a different, but both lovable, bond between the kids of the family and the parents. The dog knows this too! So they truly act like your sibling and like one of your parents' baby. Sometimes they'll cover for you, while other times you cover for them. You break the rules with them and they won't tell a soul!
