  • Stress got to me. Quit my job after 14 years. Their attempts to keep me were pathetic

  • I worked as a mechanic for 14 years at this location. 3 years ago our location got bought out by a group of investors and I was not liking the direction the company was going in.
  • I was top tech held all the training and certifications and did 55 hours a week.
  • I was the only one that had the ability to diagnose so every vehicle that came into the shop was my problem.

  • For 2 years I basically begged for them to hire someone to take a bit of the load off me since there were 3 empty bays.

  • I was brushed off every time with them saying "we're looking". Another time they told me to just use my vacation days but when I explained that if I'm gone on vacation the work piles up and I come back to a nightmare I have to rush to catch up on, their response?
  • You're a smart guy. You'll figure it out. Nope, burnout hit me good. One day I was looking at the managers computer while he was clicking around and saw a massive list of people that applied, when I asked him if any of them were candidates he said yeah, I'm rejecting them because I hate interviewing people.

  • My level of fury was indescribable. Later in the week I got an email from another reputable company looking to give me an interview so fuck it why not.
  • The timing is impeccable and this has to be a sign. Did the interview answered every question they had for me perfectly.
  • They gave me an offer. It's only $1 less an hour but the amount of benefits is astounding.

  • Some good ones being $250 a year towards boots, Pension and a higher contribution to a 401k.
  • So yeah. I accepted the offer and put in my two weeks. All hell broke loose.

  • They're panicking with the district manager calling my phone everyday to try and talk me out of it trying to offer me money, less hours and trying to figure out why I want to leave when I was very clear on why.
  • They resorted to telling me how I'm going to put the shop in jeopardy, think of my coworkers I'm going to put a burden on, we can't find someone as experienced as you ect.
  • HR did an exit interview and was straight up rude. Said to me just so you know you're not getting paid out for your unused vacation days and it's a shame because you have 93 hours accrued.

  • But you can keep all of that if you stay. I asked why they aren't paying me out and they stated I waived it when I agreed to the employee handbook.
  • I responded "you mean the part where it said if I do not sign the handbook I will not be eligible to use vacation days and possible disciplinary action?" Her response?
  • A simple yup. I'm glad I left. Loaded all my shit on to a trailer and didn't look back.

  • Been at the new place for a week and I'm loving it. The manager is very cool and told me he knows about where I'm coming from and this shit will not happen here, I was hammering out work and he told me he appreciated me trying to help the shop times but to take it easy and slow down a bit because he doesn't want me to be stressed out about beating them, that he prefers quality over quantity and my mental health.
  • The amount of times he's sincerely told me good job made me realize how I NEVER got that at my last job and I don't know how to process it yet.
  • Between him and my coworkers we can hurl insults at each other all day, laugh about it and nobody gets hurt feelings.

  • I think I'm going to have a good time here and actually start enjoying my career choice again.

  • RadishNew6502 My husband is a lead mechanic at a world wide automotive company for the past 22 years. The shit that is happening at corporate level is fucking horrible. I don't have words. He can clear 100k a year, and has done so for many years. Until January this year. They decided to restructure the pay for everyone to make it fair for the tire techs/lube guys. His pay is now flat rate at $33.50 an hour for 30 hours a week guaranteed. He will be lucky if he clears 70k this year as a result. E
  • SnooOranges8194 Should've taken vacation and then put in notice
  • CuteSpacePig My husband was a dealership mechanic for 6 years before leaving to work for the city. All of your previous company's excuses sound like the ones my husband used to vent to me about. He's a lot happier now in the public sector with better benefits and union protection. Sounds like you're finding more fulfillment and appreciation now as well. Congratulations on the new job
