Happy anniversary to the publication of The Two Towers! Who knew that seventy-one whole years ago, one of the most iconic points of the whole LOTR series would begin to engrave its place in history forever? Those who saw that it was going to be such a memorable book must have been pretty smug with themselves.
As it so happens, it is also the birthday of the 90-year-old Farringdon Folly in Oxfordshire, England, thought to be part of Tolkien's inspiration for Saruman's tower of Orthanc. Just like the literature it inspired, it has stood the test of time. It hasn't quite reached the point of getting memes made about it, though, unlike the beloved franchise that it plays a part in. Considering all the obscure corners of LOTR lore that the memers of the fandom manage to uncover, perhaps it won't be long before it gets a starring role here.
