    ‘I struggled to keep from smiling on the call': Remote employee offered an 8-month severance package just days before quitting when their company initiates a return-to-office mandate

    There are very few moments in our careers that shine like a brilliant sun through the fog of the day-to-day workplace slop. For this employee, their best day ever on the job turned out ot be one of their last, as they were just about to quit when they found out they could be receiving a severance package from the company. As fortune would have it, the company was initiating a return-to-office mandate that forced all of the remote employees to commute back to work, but in lieu of slave driving everyone back to their cubicles, they gave their workers the choice: Stay and commute, or accept an 8-month salary payout.

    Well, because this worker already had one foot out the door, a new job lined up, and 2 months until their new start date, the severance package not only acted as a surprisingly wonderful financial cushion, but a brilliant, beaming, and serendipitous moment in their entire career. If only we were all so lucky.
