Most of us like to pretend we're spontaneous, free-spirited creatures… and yet my work routine would suggest otherwise. I have, no exaggeration, an entire closet AND clothing rack full of clothes, but I rotate through the same ten work outfits. I also take the same route to the office every day; occasionally I'll switch it up and come in through the back entrance, but that's usually only if I'm feeling particularly playful and wild.
I know I'm not alone. Whether we admit it or not, humans are creatures of habit. Our commutes, our morning coffees, our favorite jackets are the day-to-day decisions that make up the rhythm of our lives. That's exactly what makes this photo series by Peter Funch so fascinating; for nine years, he stood on the same street corner and photographed strangers on their daily commute… only to realize that many of them passed by in the exact same way, at the same time, wearing the same outfits or striking the same unconscious pose. This series is an oddly beautiful reminder of how much of our lives runs on autopilot.
