    Employee refuses to attend a mandatory, unpaid Saturday team-building event so he can spend quality time with his child, sparking workplace conflict as his boss questions his commitment to “company culture”: ‘Saturday is my one full day with my kid’

    It often feels like office rules are changing daily, on a never-ending cycle of 'What suits management best today?'  However, last time we checked, when an office activity is mandatory, that generally coincides with said activity being paid. So when a company decides to take up your whole Saturday with a super-duper mandatory bowling team activity, it's normal to expect to be paid for those precious Saturday hours missed. Yet, it seems as though these managers didn't see eye-to-eye on the whole 'we want to pay you for taking up one of your only two days off' thing. 

    So this employee told his managers that he would not be able to attend. Saturday is the only full day he gets with his child a week, and he intends to use it to the fullest. However, his managers seemed to take this as a lousy excuse for being' uncommitted to team culture'… Labeling him as someone who couldn't care less about his coworkers. But the truth is, family does come first, and he's not going to disappoint his child, just to prove some entitled management team wrong, and he shouldn't have to either!
