16 Historical Figures That Lived Long Enough to Have Their Pictures Taken

When you're sitting in history class, half-listening to someone read from the textbook while quietly dreading your own turn, the past feels impossibly far away. All these men in powdered wigs with swords depicted in oil paintings seem almost mythical. Even the historical documentaries your teacher puts on (usually when they're clearly hungover) tend to make those centuries feel like they happened on a whole other planet.

But some of that stuff was actually insanely recent. A surprising number of those stiff, stoic figures in elaborate royal garb actually lived long enough to sit for a photograph. No, not a painted portait, but a real picture! By then, a lot of them didn't look quite so regal anymore but more like your great-grandparent reluctantly posing for a family photo with tired eyes and hunched shoulders.
