Anyone who has had an overprotective parent knows how difficult it can be to find one's own autonomy. Sure, when you're young, there isn't much you can do about it while you are living underneath your parents' roof. However, when you come of age and you start to learn what it takes to be your own person, independent of the people who raised you, you tend to learn when it's time to stand up for yourself.

This 18-year-old realized that her overprotective mother was more than just a helicopter parent. It turns out there was something far more sinister going on. It got to the point when the author demanded to have the original copies of her social security card, passport, and birth certificate, which her mother initially refused. Why? Most of the time, when we come across stories about overbearing parents, the takeaway is that the parents need to emotionally let go and accept the fact that their kid is now an adult. In this instance, the protectiveness was simply an act. Instead, this mother needed to let go because she likely was withholding her daughter's documentation from her in order to commit fraud in her daughter's name. Parenting does not get much worse than that, folks!
