A Glimpse Into Disneyland’s Opening Day in 1955

I've always loved Disneyland because even after shelling out a hundred or so bucks of my own, hard-earned adult money, I still feel like a kid again once I'm through the gates. The Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, and the Pirates of the Caribbean ride are my personal go-tos. Yes, I am incredibly basic. But even these iconic rides didn't exist when the park first opened back in 1955. 

When Disneyland debuted in Anaheim, it wasn't yet the sprawling, meticulously engineered fantasy theme park we know today. It was much smaller, simply, and honestly kind of chaotic. The freshly painted rides were breaking down, the asphalt was still soft from the summer heat, and over twice as many guests as planned ended up pouring through the gates. But even amid all of the chaos, there was something magical about it. Walt Disney himself was there, walking down Main Street to watch people step into his dream for the very first time.
