HOA sends non-HOA homeowner a letter demanding her to follow all HOA rules because her home's previous owner agreed to do so: ‘[They said] I still have to follow them’

There are two types of people in this world: Those who join HOAs, and those who would rather… not be on this earth anymore than join an HOA. Which one are you?

If you're the latter, you'll probably start blowing scalding steam out of your ears before you finish this story. Picture this: You finally purchase your first home, and you're excited that you are finally not beholden to pesky leases that force you to refrain from drilling holes in walls, retiling your bathroom, and basically, making the place your own. Well, surprise! Even though you aren't in an HOA, the HOA near you expects you to abide by the same rules. So, technically, you are in an HOA because you're being forced to listen to someone else's rules. Hey, at least you're not paying for it, right…?

What would you do in this homeowner's situation? On the one hand, she thinks the empty threat letter the HOA sent her is ludicrous, but she doesn't know if she is completely in the clear.
