Employee plans exit after getting reprimanded for not requesting PTO in advance despite family emergency: 'I'm so done!'

Whatever happened to showing employees grace when it comes to emergencies?

This author's boss took him by surprise when he showed absolutely no compassion after the employee made a sudden and unexpected PTO request due to the fact that his mother experienced a dire medical emergency.

Of course, every company has certain rules and regulations when it comes to requesting time off, but nine times out of ten, there are exceptions for family emergencies. The fact that this boss knew full well that this was a sensitive situation and still tried to pull this nonsense says everything we need to know about his moral backbone or lack thereof.

The company's typical policy is that employees are supposed to make their PTO requests to HR at least two weeks in advance. However, when the author was called into a "quick chat" with HR to discuss this policy, he knew that it was time to leave this toxic workplace environment high and dry.

Let this story serve as yet another potent reminder that HR is not really there to defend employees at all. They are there to enforce arbitrary rules when it best suits the company and those at the top of the corporate hierarchy. Most employees are vaguely aware of this in theory, but when HR displays this kind of audacity in such egregious circumstances, it's hard to keep your head down and continue to work in such a messy place.
