There are so many stray animals that it can become a burden to even think about caring for them. As altruistic as someone may be, they can never save all the stray animals, or solve world hunger, or cure cancer. We may have the best intentions, but it's not always simple to navigate those feelings. In this story, the protagonist was out on a run the day after his birthday, when he suddenly hears meowing from the sewer below. He looks in to see an innocent and scared little cat. He takes the poor thing home, and immediately feeds him and takes him to the vet. Though he's skinny and possibly malnourished, he now has a cat in his life.
It's almost like the cat chose him, or that it was fate that brought them together. It's not everyday that you find a stray cat and get to take him home.
