22-year-old daughter refuses to go on family trip, after her family tells her she can bring her girlfriend, and then suddenly uninvites her days before leaving, claiming they wanted it to be “only family”

The family trips are those few special times a year, where the family dynamics are really tested…yet, it is also the time when bonds are strengthened and memories are molded. It is an essential part of any family that is lucky enough to experience it, whether taking place across seas or one street away. Yet, as children grow older, their demands to grow the family trip 'circle' becomes greater, with a desire to add additions in the form of friends and partners. Sometimes the friends make the cut, but more likely, once a partner has fairly earned their spot, they can join the circle permanently.

However, some partners are taken more seriously than others, and not necessarily based on whether or not they've given or been given a shiny ring to place upon their left hand. This 22-year-old daughter is met with gallons of disappointment after initially being told her girlfriend is welcome on the trip, until being 'uninvited' by the daughter's family days before, without any valid reasoning but the lack of 'space'. Her family eventually admits that they want to spend quality time together as a family…However, she argues that inviting someone and then going back on your word is cruel, and she no longer feels respected enough to attend the tip without her…

We can definitely say we would love our partners to make memories with our family, but if family time is what is craved, we would respect that. It’s important to set aside quality time for those who have been there since the beginning, and oftentimes without distractions…We don’t think the last-minute ‘take-backs’ are fair, but we do understand the importance of ‘family-only’.
