Family forces 17-year-old to share her birthday party with her grandma, refuses to let her invite 1 or 2 friends: 'My grandma doesn't want strangers in her home'

It's her birthday too, you know!

It can be tough to share a birthday with a major holiday. I have a friend who was born the day before 9/11, and people always tell her how lucky she is that she missed that birthday by a hair. While she's also grateful that her birthday isn't 9/11, the shadow of 9/11 is always looming over her big day.

It's tough to have factors beyond your control outshine your birthday, because that day is supposed to be all about you. It's no fun if your birthday is Christmas Eve and none of your friends can ever celebrate it with your because they're busy with their families. You truly cannot control when you're born, so all you can do is hope that your friends and family love you enough to prioritize your big day no matter where it falls on the Gregorian calendar.

If you share a birthday with a family member or friend, it can be tempting to do a combined birthday party. This works much better when both birthday girls/boys in question are adults, but kids might not be thrilled having to share their birthday with someone else, and they have a right to not be thrilled by that.

The family in this story has never taken into consideration that their teenage relative might not be thrilled about her birthday constantly being relegated to a “family party” where none of her friends are allowed to attend just because her birthday is on the same day as her paternal grandmother's birthday.
