'Getting locked out of entry-level jobs is pretty soul-crushing': Interviewer implies 24-year-old library worker is "unqualified" to work at a pizza parlor

When a young person with job experience applied to an entry-level food position, she was humbled by an arrogant hiring manager.

There are certain jobs you think you can fall back on if times get dire. It may not be something you want to do, but maybe it's something you know you can do. If you ever fall on hard times, the service industry always seems to need more hands on deck. That does not mean it's easy work. Far from it. It's backbreaking, often thankless work that comes with dealing with annoying customers, being on your feet all day, and working long hours. It also doesn't mean that there are certain skills you need to develop if you're going to thrive. 

Being a good server, or line cook, or host requires a whole host of skills that not everyone has. All that said, though, you would hate to be shut out of a gig at your local Little Caesars. That would be an understandable blow to the ego. But sometimes when you give someone a little bit of power, their first instinct is to use it against others. They want to make everyone else feel small, so they condescend, belittle, and conduct themselves with arrogance.
