Tenant outsmarts on-site landlord and gets her fired, receives full deposit back and pays reduced final rent: 'Checkmate'

Bad landlords come in all shapes and sizes: the ones who "forget" to cash your rent check until it's late, the ones who believe quiet hours begin at 6:59 p.m. sharp, the ones who act like a leaking water heater is merely character development for you as a tenant.

This story has all of them wrapped up in one person, except she wasn't even the real landlord. She was the assistant-to-the-landlord, a fellow tenant whose rent was cut in half to play building manager. And like a true HOA-style villain, she immediately decided she hated the tenant in this story.

Why, might you ask? It was all because he got the apartment instead of her friend with terrible credit. She was petty from day one.

She started calling out friends for parking an inch over the line, threatening to withhold deposits, dragging her feet on repairs, nitpicking noise levels, but the tenant was prepared. He built a neat little folder of evidence, waited until the actual landlord came by, and laid it all out.
