Dating your own chatbot is becoming more and more prevalent these days, but not everyone is accepting these relationships as legitimate. Just ask the members of r/MyBoyfriendIsAI. They're in full romantic relationships with their AI chatbots, but they realize that their love affairs are still considered taboo. To many people, hearing someone announce they're in a romantic relationship with ChatGPT is as baffling as if they announced they're in love with their Sims, or that they're crushing on an imaginary friend.
Interestingly, a lot of people in that sub also have real-life partners, most of whom seem supportive of their loved ones' relationship to their chatbot. But for some people, dating a chatbot is all they need to find fulfillment in life.
This person may have made a mistake by revealing their relationship to their family members, though. At best, they might get lightly teased for dating ChatGPT, and at worst, well… you can read about that down below. For many people, the idea of having a serious relationship with an unfeeling, uncaring, large language model is cause for laughter, not something that could be taken seriously. Still, this person may have some hope yet. There are many instances where people "come out" to their family members and get really awful first reactions, followed by big fights, followed by apologies, and at some point in the future, you and your family have a loving relationship again. Humans aren't perfect, as this side of the internet knows all too well, but if your family can understand that you know what's best for you and show respect towards you (and your ChatGPT lover) than there's still hope for a peaceful future together.
