Gandalf may be a silly conjurer of cheap tricks, but if he weren't an all-powerful, good-hearted, wise wizard, would he be able to create magical floating ships with nothing but some longbottom leaf and an old pipe? Actually, yeah, he probably could. Of all the great wizards, Gandalf is the most down to Middle Earth. Radagast has his head up in the clouds, dreaming of a hare-drawn forest sled and the perfect day down by the river. Sarumon is objectively Evil's right-hand man (or should I say the "White Hand" man, badum-CH!). And don't even get me started on Tom Bombadil.
Lord of the Rings fans love all the great Maiar for all of their flaws and strange dispositions, because their contributions to the realms of Middle Earth are immeasurable. Without Gandalf, who would lure the hobbits out into the big people's lands for a few adventures? Without Radagast, who would protect the birds and the beasts? And without Sarumon, where would the orcs emerge from their sludge cocoons? Everyone plays a role in LOTR, big or small, good or evil.
Because at the end of the day, it's a balanced world, just like our own.
