  • "AITA for telling my husbands cousin she inherited money from our grandparents he never knew about?"

Last Summer I attended a family reunion on my late dads side. Eventually while making the rounds, I wound up speaking with my cousins husband.

  • The conversation shifted to my late dad. I regrettably had to sell his home and it was a huge drama.
  • My aunt/uncle wanted my dads house but I sold it because my dad had already given up his third of his inheritance from my grandparents, and I felt that was more than enough and they didn't need his house too.

  • They have since passed as well so all inheritance has been dispersed but evidently he wasn't clear on the details.
  • His eyes widened and he said he was told my dad was left everything by my grandparents and my aunt and uncle were 'froze out' from the will.

  • This is why they asked for me to deed his house to them. I was baffled.
  • He had no clue that not only did my dad pass up his share, his wife (my cousin) benefited immensely when my aunt passed shortly after my dad.

  • My cousin bragged to us about paying off her student loans, posted her travels abroad, and, even got some elective surgery.
  • But the thing is, she never told her husband that she had the money to pay for anything.
  • Seems she just made him believe it was all on credit and had to be paid back, or, someone else in the family covered the cost out of sympathy or generosity.

  • For the past five years, her husband has been working upwards of three jobs to pay off imaginary student loans and credit card bills that might not even exist, plus, she's been a SAHM to one child that splits their time with their bio dad and is almost in middle school.
  • He went quiet for a moment and then whispered to me that he felt like his entire life was a life.

  • I didn't know what to think or say at that moment. He left the reunion saying he felt ill and I felt weird about the entire conversation but hadn't lied about anything.
  • Flash forward a couple months later; I just caught up with a relative who mentioned that they are getting divorced.
  • My relatives are split because half of them feel I didn't need to say anything about the inheritance issue or the fiasco around selling my dads property while others feel like they were heading towards divorce anyway because of my cousins ways with money and the financial stress underlying her marriage.

  • Diligent-Beach8532 NTA. You didn't out her secrets, you simply corrected a lie. She is the one that decided to improvise her marriage with financial deceit. Your conversation might have sped things along. Her straw house being impacted was inevitable.
