While I've played both of those games and think there's nothing in there that 14-year-olds haven't heard on South Park or YouTube, I understand that it's not at all age appropriate. Still, throwing te gift away instead of giving it back or keeping it until her son went off to college is pretty extreme.

I don't think that our narrator deserves to be shunned by his family, but in hindsight, it definitely would have been a good idea to tell his cousin to wait to open until he got to college.

Family gatherings can be something of a minefield when it comes to gift-giving, especially when there are different generations with different sensitivities spending time together. What might feel like a thoughtful and fun present to one person can land as wildly inappropriate to another. One year, my aunt's boyfriend got me a "haunted" vintage doll for Christmas; I thought it was hilarious, but my grandma sincerely thought it was cursed and got pretty upset over the fact that he brought it into the house – on a holiday, no less! It really demonstrated that sometimes, you have to be aware of your audience.
One young man found themselves in this sort of family feud after giving his newly-graduated cousin both money and a party game to go with it. The graduate and his teenage friends seemed to be having fun playing until his mom stormed in, furious at what she considered to be "filth" in her own home. She threw the game out, scolded our narrator in front of everyone, and essentially banned him from all family gatherings. Months later, he's still being alienated, and he's wondering where he crossed the line, especially since he considers this game to be pretty tame compared to others in the same vein.
