Man kicks entitled cousin out of his apartment after he pushes every boundary, treating it like a free buffet and swap shop: ‘I tried helping him out, but he acted like being my guest gave him free food, free laundry, and even free clothes’

  • Cousin’s entitlement made me kick him out

  • I let my cousin stay in my apartment for a week because he said he was having problems with his mom and got kicked out.

  • Since I live close by and stay alone, I said yes. I work in corporate, so I'm out most of the day anyway.
  • He told me that in exchange for letting him stay, he'd do the chores like cleaning and laundry, which sounded fair.

  • By the third day, I noticed my groceries were almost gone. I had just gone shopping before he came, so I was confused about how everything disappeared that fast.

  • Then on the fourth day, I came home and saw him wearing one of my shirts.
  • Not just any shirt, but the one my girlfriend bought for me. I wore it the day before and left it in the laundry basket, and now he was wearing it.

  • When I confronted him, he said he didn't bring enough clothes with him and that he didn't have a decent shirt to wear since he was going out to meet his friends.
  • Because he had already done the laundry, he figured it was fine to just take one of mine and wear it.
  • No asking, no permission, just his excuse that he "needed" it. That was the last straw for me.

  • I called my aunt and told her to take him back because he was treating my apartment and my stuff like it was all his.
  • I tried helping him out, but he acted like being my guest gave him free food, free laundry, and even free clothes.

  • Ephemeral-laremehp3 There's clearly a reason he was kicked out. Protect your peace.
  • Readabook23 Sounds like you did the right thing.
  • VelourCrush Man, you were way too patient tbh. Letting someone crash is already generous, but expecting them to respect your stuff is basic decency. Taking your clothes without asking? That's a whole next level of entitled. Good call kicking him out before things got worse. Hope your aunt gives him a reality check.

  • MikeySmooth441 Don't listen to the criticizing you on this forum. You did the right thing. You tried to help the guy but he is taking advantage. You work and your home is sacred some very immature people you give them an inch and they take over.
  • Lonely-Crew8955 Your cousin ate your food? That is a real entitlement! He should have stayed hungry!
  • Aexegi My great grandma used to say "guest is for one day, then have your duties". In my experience, I learned that if you want to help someone with accomodation, just help them rent a room, maybe even a room in a hotel, and don't invite to live in your house. Save your peace and the peace of your family.

  • No_Pineapple6086 Yup. Time for him to go
  • LibraryMouse4321 Should have driven him to the store to replace your groceries, then forced him to pay.
  • InvisibleCat11 I wouldn't have let him in the house in the first place. You're just too kind
