AITA for telling my MIL she's not allowed to discipline my son after she made him scrub her floors as punishment?

It's really giving Harry Potter and the Dursleys; it just seems like such an extreme punishment over some juice. I guess if he had spilled it on purpose, it would make sense. But accidents happen. Beyond simply cleaning up the juice, this was totally unnecessary.

Wow, this is actually a really good point. Adults that enjoy cleaning probably weren't forced to do it as a punishment as children. Maybe that's why I dislike washing the dishes so much but don't mind other tasks like sweeping or mopping.

62-year-old grandmother makes 9-year-old grandson clean the entire kitchen after he accidentally spills some juice, mom confronts her for disciplining her son so harshly and considers banning her: 'Chores are one thing, punishment is another'
When you are a parent, you have to learn how to balance setting boundaries, teaching responsibility, and trying not to lose your cool over simple accidents. There's a parenting trend going around on Instagram right now where moms and dads film their small kids pouring juice, water, or milk into a cup. As you can imagine, there's a lot of spillage, but instead of getting angry, the parents let their kids make mistakes. For many, the videos feel oddly healing; they're like watching an old, painful cycle break. Parents today are making a conscious effort to choose patience in moments where, as kids themselves, they might have been met with yelling or harsh punishments.
But not everyone is on board with this softer approach. Some still believe accidents should come with consequences, and that kids only learn responsibility through discipline. That generational divide is at the heart of this story, where a 9-year-old spilled juice at his grandmother's house. Instead of handing him a towel, she ordered him to clean the entire kitchen for an hour, making him feel "like a servant." His mom wants to ban her, but her husband isn't too keen on slamming the door on his mom's face. Still, this was pretty extreme over some spilled juice.
