Part-time employee making $25 an hour asks manager for a 300% raise, claims the business couldn't run without her: 'The business has been around for 50 years. She’s been here for 3'

Asking for a raise can be challenging, especially if you feel you're significantly underpaid. You want to ask for something realistic, but not so low that they give you less than you deserve. It's usually best to ask for a raise that's a little above what you'd be expected to be paid, so you can meet in the middle and get the raise you want and deserve.

There can be repercussions for asking for a highly unrealistic raise. It's unlikely you'll get fired for asking for way more money than you'd ever get for the role you're in, but your boss might question your willingness to stay in your role at your current pay rate. Your boss might not trust you if they think you're only in it for the money, which is lame, but it's the name of the game. Your boss will keep their cards close to their chest, as will you, and neither of you will fully know what the other wants from this working relationship.

The manager in this story knows exactly where his employee stands: she wants money, and lots of it. Instead of accepting his offer for the company to pay for her degree, she turned down a 5% pay increase after asking for a 300% raise. She thinks she's a lot more critical to the company than she is, and though you could argue that she is being underpaid, she clearly has too-high expectations of her pay grade. Nobody without a degree is realistically making six figures with only a part-time job.
