One of my favorite parts of Avatar: The Last Airbender has always been the bizarre hybrid animals. From freaky frog squirrels to adorable turtle ducks to the majestic polar bear dog, the creators weren't afraid to get wacky with their mashups. The best gag came later in Legend of Korra, when the characters met an ordinary bear (no, not a platypus bear, not an armadillo bear) and were utterly baffled by it.
As a kid, I thought these creatures were pure fantasy, the kind of whimsical invention you'd never see in real life. Of course, I eventually learned about ligers, beefalos, grolar bears, and even the humble mule. But let's be honest — none of those felt half as magical as a flying bison or a saber-toothed moose lion.
That's where Pokémon comes in. The entire franchise is basically built on the idea of taking creatures we recognize, mashing them together, and sprinkling on just enough imagination to make them irresistible. While the official Pokédex is already packed with plenty of inventive designs, fans are constantly taking things one step further.
Below, one talented Pokémon fan has illustrated exactly what happens when you combine a Charmander with a Blastoise (and many more mashups you never knew you needed), and the results are absolutely adorable.
