Employee gets even with stingy boss after he refuses to allow employees to ask for replacement pens if they lost theirs: 'You had to turn in [your] old out-of-ink pen to get another'

It can be a challenge to justify certain expenses to a cheap boss, but one should not have to advocate for more pens. We all know that numerous people on the managerial level are probably expensing a crazy amount of unnecessary purchases from work dinners, business trips, and other "needs." So why should the hard-working employees of this company have to stress about having to keep track of just one single pen during their employment?

Yup, you read that right. This micromanager grants new hires one working pen to use for meetings, client-facing interactions, and all other work matters. If they lose that pen, they don't get a replacement. The only way employees can get a second company-branded pen is if they can prove to their boss that the first one ran out of ink or is not functioning properly. 

Accountability is obviously an important part of workplace culture, but being held accountable for a pen is a tad over the line. Thankfully, this author and several of his other coworkers understood that and were not willing to let their manager walk all over them. So, the author decided that the best way to go about this was to buy a bunch of cheap pens that were deemed inappropriate for the office and to hand them out to employees when they lost their one precious company-branded pen. Sure, this was the kind of risk that not every employee was brave enough to enact. After all, their boss clearly is not one to use logic and reason while figuring out which policies are necessary and worth enforcing. He could very well have fired the author for trying to make a point, but instead, the strategy worked and convinced the boss to relent.
