It's funny to think about the way we look at our heroes and how that changes over the years. And I don't mean real-life heroes - we still look at those with admiration and awe. I'm talking about our mythical heroes.
They used to be gods, literally. Zeus, Thor, Hercules - giant figures with even bigger egos, living in the sky and hurling lightning bolts. Then came the modern era and those gods were replaced by superheroes. But at first, they were basically the same thing: Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America - larger-than-life icons of perfection, fighting the good fight without breaking a sweat.
Now, in the post-modern era? They're just dudes. People with powers and problems. Batman can't talk to people. Superman is emotionally repressed. Spider-Man is broke. The Flash is always late. They're still heroes, but they're us.
And that's exactly what makes Mike Maihack's art so perfect. His illustrations take these iconic characters and gently remind us that behind all the power and mythology, these are just weird little guys trying their best. His style is light, warm, and extremely cute - Batman is grumpy, Superman is soft, and Spider-Man is very, very tired.
