Host makes friend pay $250 for antique heirloom chair that broke under her, friend says no: 'It broke from your weight plopping down all at once'

The embarrassment of breaking something at someone's house is payment enough in my book. Who in their right mind wouldn't feel crazy if they broke something? Most people have more than a healthy amount of shame in them; they don't need any extra. If I broke a glass at someone's house, I would feel so ashamed that to ask for payment on top of that would be like gilding the lily.

I heard an anecdote once about a hostess who took her job so seriously that she would purposefully break one of her plates in front of everyone to show that it was okay so that her guests could carry on without fear of breaking something. If the host is endorsing it, it must be okay. I find this to be a very powerful story. The sacrifice of a host to give up something she presumably cares about to allow her guests the freedom of a good time unmarred by the fear of breaking something. This is how all hosts should be, because when you take on the job, you take on the risk that something you love will break.

The best motto remains: be a mensch. If someone unintentionally breaks something in your house, refuse their offer to pay for it.
