Oh, wow. We didn't even think of this, but now it makes sense. If that is true, that's really shady on the landlord's end. In fact, that might even be illegal? We're not sure of the legal ins and outs of this kind of thing, but at the very least, it's morally wrong. Too bad there isn't a morality police. We would happily volunteer to be the captain of said force!

Always get everything in writing. Everything. You never know what will happen in the future, and something someone said isn't enough nowadays to use as a defense in case something like this happens. We learned this from our dad, and it might be one of the most useful things we've kept with us since.
