HOAs are supposed to keep neighborhoods looking nice, but sometimes they take it way too far. From fining homeowners for slightly overgrown grass to policing mailbox decorations or even the color of your front door, it can feel like living under constant surveillance. You start noticing neighbors tiptoeing around, measuring hedges with rulers, or taking photos of stray leaves. It's all meant to maintain supposed community standards, but sometimes the standards are less about aesthetics and more about power trips.

Some homeowners try to play along, some quietly rebel, and others… go full-blown malicious compliance. At least, that's what happened in one Florida neighborhood.
A homeowner received a $4k fine for an absurd list of violations, everything from garbage cans being slightly visible to bushes not trimmed appropriately, even a Ring doorbell installation. Every single notice was supposed to be sent via certified mail, a rule the HOA conveniently ignored.
Instead of quietly paying up, the homeowner went all-in, sending dozens of certified letters back, demanding official records for each supposed violation, and roping other neighbors into the effort.
