Wife refuses to give up her bed for mother-in-law during her visits, offers her an air mattress in the living room instead, husband puts his foot down: ‘It's selfish not to give her our bed’

Give someone a finger, and they'll take the whole hand–that is what we usually say to warn others about people who take advantage of those around them. 

Usually, we find ourselves dealing with people who take our whole hand within our family. Mothers-in-law, for example, tend to take a lot more than they are offered, which might just be the case in the story below, and that is exactly what her daughter-in-law is trying to avoid.

After this mother-in-law went through an unpleasant divorce, she felt like she wanted to be close to her son and DIL. The problem is, she lives far and doesn't drive, so every trip must become an overnight stay. Her son and his wife don't have a guest room, and the only thing they can offer the MIL is a sofa bed or an air mattress, neither a good option for a woman in her 70s. 

Her son thinks the best option would be to give his mom their bed while she stays over, but his wife knows that this might lead to a finger vs. a whole hand situation, and she is hesitant to agree.
