Kid pushes back against Mom using ChatGPT to write book for her: '[She] calls herself an author without doing any of the work'

As a writer, you'd want to celebrate the success of a family member who's publishing a book… right? 

Well, this kid is infuriated at their mom, and they have every right to be annoyed. As they shared, Mom has "written" a "book." She asked ChatGPT to pen the novel for her, and get this — she didn't even bother to read it before publication! 

There are plenty of discussions about AI technology and just how far the limits can be pushed. For example, I know a lot of folks who use it constantly, for every little thing, and it kind of breaks my heart. Like, what do you mean you asked ChatGPT to write your Grandma's birthday card for you? You're asking it to write funny songs for you instead of brainstorming with your friends and laughing for hours? You want it to text your best friend back to console them after a breakup? I don't know, it feels like a little bit of my soul perishes every time I hear things like this. And AI art really grinds my gears. Why can't AI do our dishes or prepare our meals for us instead of making our art for us? 

The same goes for AI writing, which is seeping into all aspects of the written word. News orgs have been busted for using it, it's routinely penning captions for social media, and of course, people are writing books this way. While many readers won't necessarily care or even notice that what they're reading is artificially generated, they'll have a subpar reading experience either way. AI isn't always good at crafting coherent plots, characters, or building worlds. And this "author" chose to publish a book without even reading it first! It'll be interesting to see if she gets much backlash — provided the novel even remains for sale on the site in the first place — and if she gets any reviews about the material of the book pointing out the fact that no human wrote it.
