Mother-in-law claims bride ruined her dramatic smoke-machine entrance at her wedding by screaming 'call 911' when she saw the smoke: 'I thought there was a fire or some sort of emergency'

AITAH for "ruining" my MIL's surprise wedding entrance by closing the door on her dramatic smoke-machine reveal?

Okay, so this happened at my wedding last month, and my husband and I are still arguing with his mom about it. My MIL decided that she wanted to make a "grand entrance" to the reception. She didn't tell us her plan in advance. She rented a small handheld smoke machine (like you'd see at a high school play) and coordinated with the DJ to play her "theme song" (which was, unbelievably, Eye of the Tiger).

When she arrived at the venue, she started the smoke machine, cranked up the song, and dramatically threw the doors open, only to find me standing right there, greeting guests. I panicked. I thought there was a fire or some sort of emergency. I slammed the doors shut and yelled, "Call 911!" because the smoke started billowing everywhere and people started coughing.

Turns out, she wanted to walk into the reception hall in a cloud of smoke, then "pose" on the dance floor before dinner. But because I closed the door, the effect was ruined, and she ended up entering late, coughing, and slipping on her sequinned shawl. Now she's furious and says I "stole her moment." My husband thinks I overreacted, but I genuinely thought the building was on fire!

AITAH for closing the door on her "grand" entrance? Should I have just let her do her thing, or did I handle it okay?

Atlanta Dave998 · 39m ago If I had a nickel for every crazy lunatic MIL at a wedding post, I'd be very, very rich. NTA. Now she's furious and says I "stole her moment." She should not have a "moment". Its not her day. She's an obnoxious drama queen.

Tiger_Striped_Qu... • 22m ago If this wasn't discussed with the bride and groom prior to the wedding then it should never happen. It wasn't her day or her moment to seize. She's an ahole.

jpb. 26m ago NTA. She is ridiculous for thinking she gets a moment at someone else's wedding, especially one she didn't coordinate with anyone. She's a moron for thinking surprise smoke wouldn't make someone think the place is on fire - you were just the first person to act appropriately in a potential fire situation.

Ask your husband if he would have preferred that you let the building burn down with him and your guests inside if it had been a real fire.
